Sein Klavierkonzert Nr. 3 in C-Dur op. 26 vollendete Sergei Prokofjew im Jahr 1921, anlässlich eines
Sommeraufenthalts an der französischen Küste. Einige Themen entstanden bereits zehn Jahre früher. Das klagende Thema des zweiten Satzes schrieb er 1913 und auch Elemente eines später verworfenen diatonischen Streichquartetts verwendete der Komponist in seinem 3. Klavierkonzert.
Dennoch klingt das Werk wie aus einem Guss und verlangt seinem Interpreten große Vielseitigkeit ab: kraftvolle Virtuosität, seelenvoller Ausdruck, intellektuelles Verstehen, Sinn fürs Groteske und außergewöhnliches Rhythmusgefühl. Edvard Griegs einziges vollständiges Klavierkonzert ist neben Peer Gynt und den lyrischen Klavierstücken eines der beliebtesten Werke des Norwegers. Der Pianist Nikolai Lugansky interpretiert zusammen mit dem Deutschen Symphonie-Orchester unter Kent Nagano dieses faszinierende Repertoire mit ebenso viel Brillanz wie Virtuosität und Gefühlstiefe.
