Le bassin amazonien : ce territoire éblouissant, doté d'une biodiversité sans égale, est devenu un symbole du désastre écologique. Ce contexte socio-politique, économique et environnemental lourd a pourtant vu émerger une scène artistique forte, marquée par une fascination sans bornes pour la magnificence et l'incessante métamorphose de sa forêt tropicale.
Mecarõ. L'Amazonie dans la collection Petitgas, pensée à partir de la collection de Catherine Petitgas, réunit plus de cent oeuvres d'une cinquantaine d'artistes du bassin amazonien de 1960 à nos jours. Signifiant « l'esprit de la forêt » en langue krahô, le titre de l'exposition prend la forme d'une invocation, il révèle l'ancrage des artistes à leur terre et leurs traditions.
Ce catalogue richement illustré réunit des textes écrits spécialement pour l'exposition : la commissaire indépendante Kiki Mazzucchelli, l'anthropologue Pedro de Niemeyer Cesarino et la commissaire et critique d'art Claire Luna ont chacun porté un regard singulier sur l'Amazonie et les pratiques artistiques contemporaines de ces lieux insaisissables. Deux entretiens avec Catherine Petitgas et l'artiste Sol Calero complètent l'ouvrage.
The Amazonian basin : this stunning territory, endowed with unparalleled biodiversity, has become the symbol of an ecological disaster. Yet the complex socio-political, economical, and environmental context has also witnessed the birth of a strong artistic scene, marked by an endless fascination for the magnificent and constantly changing tropical forest.
Mecarõ. Amazonia in the Petitgas Collection, conceived from the collection of Catherine Petitgas, reunites over one hundred artworks by more than fifty artists from the Amazonia basin dating from 1960 to present time. The title of the exhibition, meaning « spirit of the forest » in the Krahô language, becomes a summoning, revealing the artists' territorial and traditional anchorage.
This richly illustrated catalog is composed of texts commissioned specifically for the exhibition : independent curator Kiki Mazzucchelli, anthropologist Pedro de Niemeyer Cesarino and curator and art critic Claire Luna have each brought their own singular perspective on the Amazon and the contemporary artistic practices in these elusive areas. Two separate interviews with Catherine Petitgas and the artist Sol Calero complete the publication.
