He has won the Whitebread Children's Novel Award and the Smarties Book Prize and has had several of his novels adapted for film and television. A former teacher, Michael cares passionately about literature for children, and he was a driving force behind setting up the Children's Laureateship, launched in 1999. He lives in Devon where he and his wife, Clare, run the charity Farms for City Children.
