Ursa Mackenzie is a black woman caught between two cultures ? the USA and the Caribbean. Paule Marshall is the author of The Chosen People and Praisesong for the Widow, among many other novels. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she has taught in Yale, Colombia, Cornell and Oxford Universities. She is currently teaching in New York.
