Les architectures de Roland Carta, apprend-t-on dans ce livre, tissent si bien les liens entre l'antique cité méditerranéenne et son devenir qu'elles donnent l'envie à Raymond Depardon, au retour de ses lointaines errances photographiques, de redevenir citadin. Peut-on rêver de meilleur éloge ? L'architecte aurait alors adhéré à la pensée fellinienne : pour atteindre à l'universel, il faut d'abord être ancré dans le régional. Viser l'enracinement plutôt que le survol en altitude. Pouillon plutôt que Le Corbusier. Il paraîtrait qu'à Marseille certains esprits extralucides voient en lui une figure du diable. Élémentaire, chers lecteurs et lectrices exogènes. Saluer l'ange rebelle est ici une forme d'allégeance conviviale. L'arcane ou carte du diable dans le tarot de Marseille n'est-elle pas source d'énergie et force du désir. Une façon peut-être brutale, mais combien fiable, d'indiquer un chemin pour rester soi-même à Marseille et ailleurs. Roland, chrétien par ascendance, sait, depuis l'âge de raison, qu'il vaut mieux régner en enfer que servir au paradis. Chic type, decent man, galantuomo, mensch, ce fin manoeuvrier dans la cité des gréements tient de Simenon, son cousin du Nord : il comprend mais ne juge pas.

In this book, we learn that Roland Carta's architectural works weave links so well between the ancient Mediterranean city and what has become of it that they made Raymond Depardon want to become a city dweller again, on returning from his distant photographic wanderings.
