Pour beaucoup de raisons, c'est Manet qui m'intéressait : sa peinture et sa personne, il est pour moi le personnage clé de ce musée. Je n'ai pas beaucoup hésité non plus pour choisir le tableau. J'ai vu cette femme sur ce canapé, ce tableau blanc [...]. C'était évident, j'allais faire dialoguer cette femme sur son canapé, avec ses rideaux, sa robe blanche, et une « vitrine » qui allait apparaître comme un agrandissement d'un détail du tableau de Manet. - Bertrand Lavier, décembre 2007

À l'invitation du musée d'Orsay, des artistes d'aujourd'hui dialoguent avec les collections en choisissant l'oeuvre de laquelle ils se sentent proches. Naît ainsi la possibilité de voir les collections sous un nouveau jour. Marqué par l'oeuvre de Marcel Duchamp et les Nouveaux Réalistes, Bertrand Lavier, artiste français né en 1949, questionne, depuis les années 1970, les conditions de la (re)présentation de l'art et le statut de l'oeuvre d'art. C'est à travers un entretien avec Catherine Millet que Bertrand Lavier nous livre son choix de correspondre avec La Lecture de Manet.

For all sorts of reasons, Manet was the one I was interested in ; both his painting and the mon himself. For me he is thé key character in this museum. In choosing the painting l did not have much hesitation either. l saw this woman on this settee, this white picture [...]. It was obvious, l was going to have this woman on her settee enter into a dialogue, with her curtains, her white dress, and a "vitrine" (shop window) which was going to look like an enlargement of a detail from Manet's painting. - Bertrand Lavier, December 2007

On the Musée d'Orsay's invitation, artists of today dialogue with its collections by choosing a work they feel close to, there by providing an opportunity to view the collections in a fresh light. Marked by the work of Marcel Duchamp and the New Realists, Bertrand Lavier, a French artist born in 1949, has been questioning since the 1970s the conditions of the (re)presentation of art and the status ofthe work of art. In an interview with Catherine Millet, Bertrand Lavier tells about his choice to correspond with Manet's La Lecture.
